Spreading My Wings

From the CD Flying

I’m spreading my wings
and it’s good, and I know
we did the right thing
we had to let go
But I can’t help but feel
at this time of the evening
it’s your being here now that I’m needing

Something about evening
I don’t know quite how the daylight
is life light
but night light somehow
just leaves me aching
for things we once had
The casual everyday habits we shared

Some say when lovers part
mourning sets in
You’re mourning the loss
of the being you’ve been
It’s an arc in a circle
where wisdom begins
but it’s so hard to trace
where that arc begins

If I Could Sing You Well

If I could sing you well
I’d carry you on my voice to a safer place
I’d serenade you on a lake till my mouth ran dry
If I could sing you well

If I could sing you well
together
our voices on a rising phrase
like a sail
in a high wind
If I could sing you well

Every thought would be a warrior song
to help you fight
to help you stand strong
like a pillar of sound
vibrating fiercely in your defense
If I could sing you well

So your way with a melody is always with me
in the room, not in memory.
Only your presence here will do
I make no pretenses
I am no fool
I sing you, well,
just to comfort you
On a passage through hell
what can a lullaby really do?
Oh, I wish I could sing you well

Flying over the mountains
down through the pine tree maze
two sisters race the cold wind
whispering each other’s name
One lands safely
and makes the most of everyday
One is forced off the mountain
and lifts off into the haze

Resistance newspapers
smuggled in ski poles,
over the border they sail
Two teenagers on a mission
that lands them both in jail

Helga shows no remorse
She believes “Man is good”
Younger and idealistic
how could she imagine what they would do?
Ursula, locked in solitary,
puts on “the innocent” act
She reads the toilet-paper newsprint
She does sit-ups to keep her mind intact

Helga served her 3 years
but they never let her go
They murdered her in Ravensbrück
ashes beneath the snow
Ursula, 8 years in Shanghai
arrived here 60 years ago
She vowed to live and love the life
her Helga would never know

A feisty young sister
looks out from a picture frame
By her absence she is present
and her presence has never changed
Now you don’t get over everything
Sometimes you just go on
You wonder why you’re here
and she is gone
Flying, flying, flying over the mountains

The Arbor

We didn't have a plan
but we had some kind of vision
two side-frames with branches overhead
We weren't sure how to connect it all
We used nails and old guitar strings
Some branches took easy
others never took at all

Will it stand on its own?
Will the wind take it down?
Will it hold up when the branches freeze?
Binding the corners
strong against the grain
guitar strings
hammered nails
and trees

Now sometimes we got sidetracked
Thought we'd found better pieces
Too many choices
can hang you up the most
Trial and error, I have to say,
that's how it happens anyway
even when you have the sense
to sketch out every post

It's not what we expected, I won't lie
but it's crazy handsome
standing eight feet high
It's a cross between a teepee, a chupa
and an arbor
and we’ll never regret giving it a try.
We didn’t have a plan
but we had some kind of vision

I was so stuck
I was holding back
I kept the world at bay
Across the table I longed for you
I must have liked it that way
That’s all behind us now
We’re in a better place
How much longer could I drag around
that frown upon my face?

The wind blows through my heart
I’m an open window
I can feel the sky
The wind blows through my heart
I’m an open window
You’re the reason why

I am more open than I have ever been
I’m naked in the street
Everything I am is on that road before me
Is this a date I can keep?
What if I got what I always wanted?
Would I still find someone to blame?
It was always just me
I was stuck in neutral
Now I drive away

And no, it’s not like:
“The past is just passed”
I know we carry it wherever we go
But I’m not living in my baggage
got it stored in cargo
and safely in the hold

Part of the Game

I’m at a minor league ballpark
and it’s summer
and it’s so much fun to be here
The kids are all hugging the mascot
and the fans, we’re all wearing our gear
The hometown team is winning
The hometown has reason to cheer
But some nasty guy starts yelling
and all the kids can hear.

They say it’s “part of the game”
Part of the game
Nobody says it’s wrong.
It’s part of the game,
Part of the game
and everybody plays along

Now he only mouths off when it’s real quiet
He gets more vicious with each sip of beer
On the field, the players are wondering,
“How long will I be here?”
In the minors, they’re coming
or they’re going
On their way up or way down
Subject to a public ridicule
from any little guy in town

He thinks his $10. ticket’s a license
To humiliate, to personally attack
each of the other team’s players
in this place where they can’t hit him back
I’m sure that aging pitcher
The older guy he cursed out by name
in a quiet moment in front of 3000 people
knows it’s just part of the game.

It’s the cowardice that gets me
Cheap shots at the field of play
at individual guys on the losing side
just trying to get through the day

It’s just a common little public cruelty
C’mon, what’s the big deal?
See the guy’s son? That’s the one
That kid looks scared for real
Now nobody acts like we’re bothered
We just look down and nervously eat
Cause no one wants to the be
the next victim
of the bully in the aisle seat

It’s part of the game
Part of the game
Nobody says it’s wrong.
It’s part of the game,
Part of the game
And I just play along
And I just play along

Love, You Are A Mystery To Me

I’ve been in love
I thought I was
What did I know?
I was so crazy
I was so sure
I had the cure
“pink cloud”
Nothing could faze me

Love, you are a mystery to me.
What will you show,
what will I see, here with you?
Love, you are a secret still untold
that I want to hear as you unfold
Tell it to me, love

I’ve lived and learned
I’ve crashed and burned
This wreck has turned over and over
I was so smart
My jaded heart
Kept me apart
From all that I wanted

I did my best
But I’ve got regrets
I’m willing to know something new
No fake romance
No phony stance
A second chance
That’s all I ask for.

The fog is thick on the southern shore
Been lost on this sheep trail since half-past four
I hear a horn from far away
A voice in the fog
What does it say?

The cliffs are steep
I hear the sea
The wind blows me back in a single sweep
I can’t resist
I look straight down
Ten thousand seabirds in a rocky crown

All your questions
All that’s true
All your answers are in you

A tower of birds from the ocean rises
A teeming white flock of amazing size
Just once a year they meet for life
Call out to each other in the misty heights

The fogbank lifts and blows away.
As quick as it comes it is gone that way.
The trail is clear
The sea is glass
But lost in the haze
I could see at last.

Choices

Choices are made every day.
Should I tell the lie, or not?
Should I just agree with the assumption
they’ve dared to presume:
That one way is all we’ve got?

Choice are made every day.
Could I stand up in that square?
Could speak out against those odds
like they’re doing over there?

No one’s a hero all the time
We’re all just trying to get by

Choices not simple, not easy, not always clear
We’re ready when we’re ready, right or wrong.
But silence is not safety
It wears your life away
And we’re not really here for that long
Silence is not safety
It steals your life away
And you know we’re not here for that long

My mother’s mother worked this hill
a field to graze, a field to till
It wasn't much, we had our fill
but everything has changed
The market's gone, the shops closed down
there's no work here for miles around
Fewer folks live in this town
than in my parents day.

High on a hill home is calling me
High on a hill, my family

No one should have to drive so far
I seem to live inside my car
The city is the only place to make a decent wage
The leaky roof, the sagging porch,
it's too much all this back and forth
There's just so little work up north
for the bills we've got to pay.

Now we can see for miles around
down the hill is family ground
Two generations gathered round
in the rocky clay
We should sell this place, I know
uproot it all, pack up and go
Did I mention
how the gentians glow
after a rain?

There's hours to think how much I miss
the news of the day, the goodnight kiss
They'll be asleep by the time I reach
the house upon the hill.

 HOLD ON
You worked so hard in that place,
it can really break your heart
and I can see by your face
this thing is tearing you apart.
You blame yourself, I know,
but this is so much bigger than you.
They don't care who they hurt
when their deals go through.

Hold on to your self now
Hold on, you are precious to me
Hold on, don't let them have you
don't let this bring you to your knees.

The things that count for something
don't mean much to these guys.
You've got to know what's true
don't let them touch you with their lies.
I've seen you fight through hell
and go to any length
It's time to reach down that well
and draw up all your strength.

Oh, what you teach me
Oh, how you reach me
I know you will find your way.

 ANNIE
Annie,
they never expected her to live
but here she is and she’s no kid
She can’t say a word but she’s singing big
she’s shouting to the music.
It must have been a favorite song
maybe from when she lived at home.
She rings like a bell the whole song long
totally filled with music.

Oh, the joy her face can hold
She’s six years young; she’s 30 years old
She spins like a penny; she shines like gold,
totally filled with music

She lives in a group home
with Millie and Sam
Every now and then they go on the lam
out to find the ice-cream man
down by the boardwalk.
Well, everybody needs a little excitement
They get into trouble, she doesn’t like it
off to her room
but she doesn’t fight it.

  TAKEN BY SURPRISE
Taken by surprise
I never expected to lose you,
no one can accuse you
of staying overtime.
A spirit of your size
would burn any box they placed you,
why bother to encase you?
You were fire.

Alright, I get it
It's bright and brief and ended.
Why must you send it
skulking through my door?
Alright, I get it
At least give me credit.
I know I'm supposed to let it
make each minute more.

Someday every warm hand will be cold
this I know.
I just assumed you would be old
not necessarily so.

Why should I be immune?
It’s just, you left too soon
and I'm out here reading the runes
to tell me what to do.
Once again reminded,
up my face and blinded.
But, look,
the dust is shined with
shimmering, breathing light

 WONDER
A slow walk through a darkened train
a burst of color and the tunnel fades
a mountain view from an open pane
I'm up from under.
A cool hand across a furrowed brow
the softest breath breathing will allow
it's present tense, so go easy now
up from under.

How strange to feel the way I do
a pleasure so foreign
what will I do?
How will I cope
so filled with hope
and wonder?

Welcome back from the walking dead
I was so hooked on pain
I was fed on dread
deprived of sleep in a feather bed
no wonder
Be still in the warmest arms
for the longest time,
for the longest ride
as down, down, down, down, down you slide
into wonder

Listen, just take your time
There's endless space and unbroken line
Where to go and what you'll find
this time?
Change comes
as you worked, it would
Know what path it takes?
We never could.
The gift is given-
take it
and wonder.

 UNION STREET
(Ode to the Gowanus Canal)
A woman haunts the dead end
she smiles, she bends
until she sees my female face.
A counterman in the greasy spoon
slings the workers lunch at noon
by three he's abandoned the place.

The bridge is up on Union Street
to pass a tanker to it's oily berth
and the horn sings
to be home on the Gowanus
copper green vein of the earth.

On a misty night
you fear the condensation
you fear the funny flavored fog
What industry mysteries
released into the darkness
are rising from the urban bog?
Scrap shops, brass bobs,
auto wrecks and print shops
all line it's burly banks
PCB's and benzene,
microbes science has never seen
are leaching from the leaky tanks.

I've seen the trash burn
on the surface of the water
on the surface of the water fire glows
I've seen the soot
rising from the foundries
blanketing the neighborhood like snow.
There's a guardhouse
for the man who works the drawbridge
maybe twice a day it's up or it's down
there's a flagpole
and it's flying dear old glory
in the strangest breeze in town.

 THE TASTE OF YOU
We share each breath we take
until it's time to wake
then we snuggle
and you're half-way out the door.
In the rising light
as you drive out of sight
I stare outside my window
wanting more.

Though I'm left alone
I still feel you so warm
in the place that you've left in my bed.
I hold onto
the taste of you
as I make my way through the day.

We lead our separate lives
we have these workday grinds
we have time that we call our own
but when that workday grind
takes me from your side
I wish that we could hide out here at home.

 B'MAKOM IN A PLACE
Based on a saying in Hebrew by Hillel, 1st century b.c.e.
B'makom sh'ayn anashim
Hillel omer l'hishtadayl l'hiyot ish

In a place where no one's acting like a human being
we must strive to be more human
than the world we're seeing.

In a place where no one's speaking of a clear injustice
we must ring our voices out
in spite of what it costs us.

In place where no one cares about the sick we're losing
we must fight for every life
life is what we're choosing.

 SHADOWS
Shadows in the moonlight
dancing on your porch, white
Willows, they bent in deep night
that summer when I met you.

Work was our common ground
Your words first brought me around
You were strong and sleek
I was strong and round
that summer when I met you.

The days come and go
The road's so long I know
but the journey is so inviting.

Who knew what we'd go through?
Years later, I'm still in love with you
You're changing, I'm changing too
The one I want is you.

Shadows in the moonlight
dancing on your porch, white
Willows, they bent in deep night
that summer when I met you,
the summer I met you
who knew?

  BROKEN TIES
Lighten up your heavy hand
loosen up your grip
There's so much to understand
so unclench your fist.

You're tight with loss
broken ties:
open up your eyes
The dead have futures
only they can know
we must let them go.

Flash of memory fills your heart,
their presence is so damn real
Keeping cool is an art
when in dreams they feel so near.

Yes we can
get on on our own
They will always be a part
of where we go they go.

  CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM
Chorus based on a Iraqi-Jewish Hamavdil melody
trad. arranged Laura Wetzler

We're children of Abraham
we're from the same tent
let us gather in common sense
Shalom Aleichem, Aliekum Salaam
life is short, let peace be long.

Abraham, what would you say
if you knew your family was
fighting this way?
Well, you know how it is
your Dad was not amused
when you turned down
the family trade
to start something new.

So many stories
used this way and that
to justify terror
or wearing a hat.
So many stories,
you choose what you hear:
The blessings of peace
or the rantings of fear.

Not a word in years-
what a waste.
We sing the same notes
differently arranged.
Our poetry reaches
across all time
our rhythms echo
our languages rhyme.

 THE DEEPER THE TOUCH
I don't know who you're seeing now
projected on my face
but I am not your enemy
though you've put me in her place.

The deeper the touch
the deeper the fear
the deeper the backlash
plays in my ear

I know I have my part in this
I cop to what I've done
My past is littered with broken faith
this broken road I've run
but it's a long time since I cleaned up
I'm working every day
but when you need to you cough it up
and serve it on my plate.

The deeper the touch
the deeper the fear
the deeper the consequences
play in our ears

We jerk ourselves from pleasure
like it's nothing we deserve
We sabotage each happy thing
like it was our most primal urge
and the dramas come like holidays
ghosts of holidays passed
we hurt each other to push away
so no tenderness should last.

The deeper the touch
the deeper the fear
the deeper our histories
play in our ears

So it's not the movies,
it's not TV
it's not pop radio
but it's the most important thing
that I have every known
Though anger may eclipse our face
it always passes by
we begin again from a safe distance
and give another try.

The deeper the touch
the deeper the fear
the deeper the love
plays in our ears

Welcome to baby Quinn
We're happy to be in the world you're in
A new year, apple honey sweet
We hear you have your Grandma's feet.
Curly red hair, eyes so blue
Mommy and daddy are proud of you
Though the rest of us seem far away
We love you and think of you every day.

36 hours on the way
Please don't rush me, it's my birthday!”
The northern lights
The midnight sun
So many good things yet to come
Your Daddy plays mandolin, your Momma's lots of fun
Welcome to the world, little one.

36 hours on the way
I'm in no hurry- it's my birthday!”
The eagles call out, Happy Birthday, little girl”
They soar in the sky
And they turn and they twirl
All the big whales, sleek and fast
Jump in the air to meet you at last.

Hear the raven
Hear the crow
Sing your name wherever you go
All the baby bears, soft with fur,
Sing hello, hello! to her.

Welcome to baby Quinn
We're happy to be in the world you're in
A new year, apple honey sweet
We hear you have aunt Rebecca's feet.

Welcome to baby Quinn
We're happy to be in the world you're in
A new year, apple honey sweet
You'll dance, little girl, on your own two feet
Come dance, my girl, on your own two feet.

Eating helps your body grow
Energy to go, go, go!
Nothing to be shy about:
Food goes in, and poop comes out.

Poop a doopa doo doo
Poop a doopa doo doo
Poopa doo, doo, doo

Apples, pears, peanut butter and jelly
All mushed up inside your belly
Yes, it's stinky, this we know
Hold your nose and let it go.
Flush the toilet every time
Leave that potty looking fine
Always wash your hands
When you're done
Then go out and have some fun.

When you're on a camping trip
Dig a hole and cover it.
If you don't wipe like you should
Then your bottom won't feel so good.
When you eat too many beans
Then the gas gets pretty mean.
When you have your very own baby
You'll be changing poopy diapers,
And I don't mean maybe.

How do you know?
When to go?
Cause your body tells you so. (2x)

If you want to have a pet
Better get used to dealing with it.
Doggy, doggy doo doo
(Scoop it up)
Kitty, kitty litter
(Scoop it up)
Fishy, fishy foo foo foo
Scatty waddy doo doo
Scatty waddy doo doo
Scatty waddy doo doo doo
Mice make rice
Rabbits make pellets
But you ain't seen nothing
Until you've seen an elephant's!

Joy Yi Lu, yes, it's true
She can climb a tree and touch the stars
She swings the Big Dipper
Jumps into the sip-per
Slingshots the Milky Way
And lands on Mars.

That's the weirdest story I've ever heard
But I kind of like it cause it's so absurd.
Ni na, ni na, ni na, ni na, ni na na
Ni na, ni na, ni na, ni na, ni na na (2x)

Brandon likes to ride his bike
He takes a dare
And rides up in the air
He spins like a plate 'til his parachute inflates
He lands on a tent at the county fair.
Bridget and Kyle jump a thousand miles
In their brand new sneakers
They can bounce so high
They jump the Grand Canyon with great abandon
Land in Hawaii with their feet still dry.

Henry, Josh and Dave surf a giant wave
They crash with a splash
In the deep blue sea
The three big kahunas
Swim with the tunas
Juggle with an octopus
And drink kelp tea.

Emily laughs as she climbs the mast
Of a pirate ship made of potato chips!
She swings out of the blue
She ties up the crew
And sails into port to buy the onion dip.

Zoe toe-shoes in her snowshoes
She loves ballet on the coldest day
She leaps in her mu-mu, her parka, and her tutu
Plié-s with the polar bears on Hudson Bay.

Miryam, she lived long ago
Just one thing she wanted so
Girls could never go to school
But Miryam, she was no one's fool.

Pumpadapum, Miryam Capella
Pumpadapum, Miryam was smart
Pumpadapum, Miryam Capella

She would do things from her heart.
Her father was a learned teacher
Boys would come from far and wide
When they sat to study lessons
Behind the door, Miryam would hide.

Her mother helped her learn to read
Miryam loved it and wanted more
Her mother smiled and kissed her forehead
"I also learned behind the door."
Miryam, she was very angry
I don't want to hide this way”
Her mother said, "Go for it, Miryam.
You go out there, you make it change!"

In those days parents picked your partner
They worried life would be too tough
You never knew who you'd get stuck with
But there's more to life than money and stuff.
See, Miryam loved a brilliant student
She didn't care how much they earned
They would start a school together
Where every child could come and learn.

It's a fine misty morning
Rising from the waters
The earth is warm
The air is cool
The sun comes up
It's shining through

A fine misty morning
Chickadee-dee-dee is calling
Sweet & wild, you feisty child
Rise up, Misty Louise!
Good morning, baby rainbow
Get your colors on and
Let's go!

Misty light painted bright
Reaching for the sky
Dreaming on a fishpond
She waves her magic wish wand
Fishies jump
Plop! Kerplunk!
Laugh & swim away.

She rises from the ocean
Constantly in motion
Dances round up & down
Sailing on the breeze
When Misty rides her seahorse
The beach becomes a racecourse
Across the dune
She flies by noon
Rising through the sky.

Misty and the otters
Dive into the waters
Sardines skip
Flounders flip
When she swims this way
She plays along the bay surf
She rises from a glacier
Circles high in the sky
To catch the light of day.

Alexa connects ya
To your happiest time, your silliest rhyme
Alexa directs ya:
C'mon, just have fun!” (2X)
What to do? What to do? What to do, do, do?
What to do? What to do? What to do?
What'll we do? What'’ll we do?
What'll we do, do, do?
What'll we do? What'’ll we do?
What'll we do?

Hey, we could really have some fun
Look at us laughing when we run.
Go outside when the weather is great
Come inside on a rainy day date.
We could go to the park, to the gym, to the zoo
Then have a snack and a sippy cup too.
Climb on the monkey bars
Fly in the swings
Run in a circle and flap our wings.

We could make up a dance
Crazy and free
We could reach out, rock out, under the trees.
Come back home where it’s warm and cozy
Snuggle on the couch and wiggle our toes-ies.
We could play in the water
We could splash in the tub
Water all over
Rub a dub dub!
We could wiggle in a towel
Hang it on a hook.
Toddle off to bed to read a book.

We could swim like a fish
We could play the tuba
Let's take a dive
Scuba duba duba
We could strum a guitar
Bow a cello
Let's go jump in a bowl of jello.
We could talk like a doggie, like bird, like a cat
Ruff and tweet and meow like that
Moo like a cow
Buzz like a bee
I'm so happy when you’'re with me!

Andie, Andie you're so fine
Twinkle in your eye
Dimple in your smile
Andie, Andie, smart and kind
You're our city girl
Andie, Andie, what do you think?

I love that giggle, pretty in pink
Wiggle and jiggle and jump and blink
Laughing city girl
Andie Brooke, come and look
The tugboats deliver the barge up river
Sailboats glide with the tide
And wave to our city girl
Sparkling lights in the night
Broadway shows, ballet toes

So exciting, so inviting
To our city girl
Nona knit a sweater
Cozy in the weather
Mama's at home
Daddy's on the phone
To ask how you're doing?
He'll be home soon
To see his little girl
Carnegie Hall
Stands before us
That's your grandma
Singing in the chorus!

This is your town
You can be proud
To be a city girl
The world's your oyster
A day at the cloisters
Pretty paintings
All just waiting
Dinosaur museums
(Wait till you see 'em!)
Happy city girl

Ruby, a friend is like a ruby
A very precious ruby
Friends sparkle and shine
Won't you be mine?
Ruby, a good friend is like a ruby
Brings out the best in us, truly
Makes us sparkle and shine
(Makes you feel so fine)

We love to sing up high
We love to sing down low
We love to sing all kinds of songs
Where ever we go
We make up a tune
We open our mouths
And then the song sings out, la la la
We're playing in the grass
We're rolling down a hill
It really makes us laugh
And when we've had our fill
We race back up to the top and then
We're rolling, rolling down again

We're shaking like a leaf
We're turning in the breeze
We're floating to the ground
Gently to our knees
We skip and we fly
When the wind blows by
'Til we tumble, tumble into a big pile.

But once we had a fight
We couldn't make it right
So we tried again to talk it through,
And then
We both said, Sorry”
We both made mistakes”
That's what it takes to be a friend.

Bryce Addison, greased up with lanolin
Squeezed and spelunked down into a cave
She discovered a cavern where the bats were having
A big birthday party for a dragon named Dave.

Willy nilly, pick-a-Lily
Willy nilly, pick-a-Billy
They're all very nice-y
But Brycie, she's spicy!

Bryce, in Uganda, races her Honda
Out to see hippos and gorillas in the mist
She met warthogs with piglets
Piglets wearing wiglets
Wiglets in ringlets with a curly a top twist.
Bryce loves pizza and when people “meets-ha”
She invites you to greet-ha”
With her favorite snack
Pepperoni, anchovy
Shrimp with baloney
Such toppings could give you a gall bladder attack!

Bryce does karate and no one gets snotty
With a girl who can kick a pine board in two.
She takes care of bullies
She wraps them in woolies
She swaddles them sweetly
Now, go to your room!

Bryce, on a camel, chipped her enamel
Went to the dentist to get a new tooth
But he used Silly Putty
And peanut-butty
Now every mouthful sticks to her roof.”

[Peanut butter chorus]
Bryce loves sushi
Hear the beat and you'll see
Her chopsticks are tapping and her rhythm's so right
She plays just like Ringo
Zingo, Bingo, Jingo!
That restaurant's rocking every Saturday night.

We're going to the park
We're going to the park
There's the big slide
I'm climbing up high
And it's ok to let me go
I whoosh on down very fast
I land in the sand
And it makes me laugh

There's a big swing
I'm going to catch that thing
And it's ok to let me go
I pump my legs
And I point my toes
Higher and higher up I go
Splash in the fountain
It's a waterfall mountain
And it's ok to let me go
It's not deep,
I'll try not to slip
I love the water
Mommy, come take a dip

Sparrows and pigeons
Mallards and widgeons [Widgeons are a kind of duck.]
Geese and swans and dragonflies
Down by the lake
They quack and honk
They dabble and they dive
And they buzz in the swamp
There's a carousel
With chimes and bells
I'll pick my horsie
And I'll ride away
A big black beauty
With a purple mane
I'll hug her and I'll kiss her
And I'll tell her my name

We're going to the park
We're going to the park
Going to run and jump and fly away
Green, green grass and open sky
Pillow puffy clouds
Just floating by

Wetzler - FRACKING BLUES

The Fracking Blues

Words & Music © 2016 by Laura Wetzler/ Laura Wetzler Music ASCAP

Blowouts and explosions
Chemical muck and mire
Methane leaking from the cracks
The water tap’s on fire
The workers are burned and sickened
Country towns are drowned in smog
The only economic boom
Are the cancer treatment jobs.
Another earthquake in Oklahoma
And we know just what’s at fault
It’s those fracking hydraulic rigs
Weapons of assault. (Chorus)

No fracking. No pipeline.
Renew, conserve, invest.
Give me some sunshine
Let the wind blow
Baby, this is our test
Can we wean ourselves off of fossil fuels?
Lay these great big greasy (gassy) dinosaurs to rest.

Injecting poison water sands
That shake the earth below
Radioactive toxic waste
With no good place to go
The beds of ancient oceans
The scaffold beneath our feet
You can’t undermine our structure
Without wrecking us real deep
They have no right to do this
Crack our country like an egg
And leave us to pick up the pieces
Underfoot and overhead. (Chorus)

It’s an engineering fiasco
Causing damage on a massive scale
Destroying every vital resource
A design just doomed fail
The COST is just too high
Do the math, it’s very clear
We cannot sit in silence
While they take what we hold dear
They can lie all they want to
But we are sounding the alarm:
This is a failed technology
Spoiling water, air and farm. (Chorus)

It’s a failure of imagination
Consequences ignored
Destabilize, contaminate
And where’s the poison stored?
We wont be collateral damage
Or sacrificial lambs
Victims of arrogance
And selfish, greedy plans
You cannot have our water
You cannot have our land
You can’t destroy our mighty rock
Cause this is where we stand. (Chorus)

We have so many geniuses
So many brilliant engineers
I know we can do better
Than these dirty drilling gears
We need to get much smarter
We can work it out
If we do it in a way that respects the earth
And all that she’s about
Are you ready to say yes
to a better way to go?
But before we can say yes
First we must say no! (Chorus)
